History of Grama Panchayat

The Panchayat was officially established in 1960. The area of the panchayat is 19.46 sq. km. Out of the population of 26720 , 13912 are women and 12808 are men. The literacy rate of the total population is 85%. Geographically, Alathur Panchayat is in the Edanad region . The northern part of the panchayat is hilly, the southern part is hilly with forest areas, and the east and west are plains. About 20% of the total area of the panchayat is sloped. The soil is a mixture of gravel and clay. Soil is mostly found here. Most of the people of the panchayat are engaged in agriculture and agriculture-related occupations. Paddy is mainly cultivated in the plain areas. Apart from paddy cultivation, rubber, banana and vegetables are also cultivated. Rubber cultivation is found in the hilly areas. The Gayatripuzha river flowing from the east to the northwest makes these plain areas fertile. Water for agriculture is mainly obtained through the Cheramangalam Canal. Water is also obtained in some parts through the Pothundi and Malampuzha projects . 109 ponds are also among the water sources in the panchayat . 169 public wells are the main source of domestic water in the panchayat. In addition, 1036 public drinking water taps have been installed for fresh water supply. In some places in the panchayat, tube wells are also used by the people for water . Vidhimumala is the highest point in the panchayat. To make the panchayat streets passable at night, Street lights have been installed. Vidhimala, the highland of the panchayat, is a tourist attraction. The nearest airports to the panchayat for air transport are Coimbatore Airport, Kochi Airport and Karipur Airport. Ottappalam Railway Station and Palakkad Railway Station are the closest to the panchayat for rail transport. As a port, the Cochin Port is the closest to the panchayat. Bus traffic in the panchayat is concentrated at the Alathur Bus Stand. The main means of transport in the panchayat are roads. NH 47, which passes through the heart of the Alathur panchayat, connects the Vadakkanchery panchayat on the western border and the Erimayoor panchayat on the eastern border with this panchayat. Kunissery, Trippalur and Nenmara roads also pass through the panchayat . There are roads connecting the town of the panchayat, which is the taluk headquarters, to the interior. Court Road, Link Road and Bank Road up to Gandhi Junction are under the Public Works Department. Vengannoor Puzha Bridge connecting Alathur town with Vengannoor and Trippalur Gayatripuzha Bridge are the two main bridges in the panchayat. There are no large-scale industries or large-scale cooperative industries in Alathur panchayat. The panchayat currently has traditional industries and small-scale industries. Cottage industries such as pickle, mixture and pappada making exist in some places. Matchbox industry, beedi making and rice mills are in the panchayat .
